I thought I could see the finish line while running my first marathon, The Marathon Corp Marathon. I sprinted with a flourish, or so I thought
The Marine sergeant smiled and proclaimed “Just a quarter mile more, up there – referring to the Iwo Jima Monument at the of a hill.
In my haste I muttered “What?” The same sergeant smiled, again, saying “I guess you missed the sign at the turn “quarter mile more!” GROAN.
I now appreciate the wisdom in Proverbs 4:25 “Look straight ahead and fix your eyes on what lies before you.”
Life lesson learned and not forgotten. Missing a sign, being distracted, glancing to the side leads to unexpected and painful consequences, finishing the marathon without the intended flair
